Horse Lovers, Shield Your Eyes

I enjoyed certain parts of the modern art museum in Arhus, such as the museum's architectural design, the disorientating city floor and some of the interactive installations that were fun and surprising. Stephen hated the museum, except for the unassuming square padded seat that released a big cloud of smoke every time someone sat on it. I discovered that trick by accident, and my screech and quick high jump off the piece of art attracted a crowd of ankle biters, and Stephen, to jump on the seat again and again, drawing out plumes of laughter along with each burst of smoke.

Stephen and I did agree about the disturbing "Horse Sacrifice" which consisted of a looped video of a winter horse sacrifice and rows of jars filled with chopped up pieces of the sacrificed horse's body. As seasoned art critics, I think our simultaneous reaction when we viewed this one was "Ew".

Axel Lind

Stephen and I met 102 year old Skagen painter, Axel Lind, this past weekend. He sang lots of Italian opera for us and gave me a copy of his autobiography with a bit of an aria from La Bohème handwritten on the title page.

The book is in Danish, so I'm glad I'm starting up my language classes again next week. Danish, particularly spoken Danish, is still a big mystery to me.*

Axel also told us lots of stories about his visits to the United States and his visits with Fidel Castro, who he said is a lovely man personally with some political ideas he doesn't agree with much.

*In case you haven't heard it before, my teacher said Danish is not as lyrical or as beautiful as Spanish or French. She said Danish sounds like a frog barfing. Stephen thinks that Danish sounds like a record playing backward.

Hello Dad!

This statue of a fisherman located in the Skagen harbor looks exactly like my dad.

Fire Bucket

We walked around this tall metal contraption near the beach in Skagen for a while. Stephen guessed it was a "fire bucket," and he was right! A local Dane walking her dog near the structure told us it was erected to warn ships before the lighthouse was built.

Visit to the Top of Denmark

My Peace Corps friend, Stephen, is visiting me in Denmark! We spent this past weekend traveling by train to the far northern tip of Denmark.

ARHUS

On the way up from Copenhagen, we stopped for one night and a day in Arhus, where we took in the impressive modern art museum there (built and stocked with descending rings of exhibits that represent Dante's "Divine Comedy") and a traditional Danish meal.

Stephen gamely plowed through a dish recommended to us by a local ice cream shop girl. It consisted of a huge bowl of thickly sliced, hard fried bacon, parsley-covered peeled baby white potatoes, and about three cups of thick, creamy white sauce to pour over the bacon and potatoes.

I ate what I could of an enormous bowl of fried bacon pieces and fried cubed potatoes swimming in bacon grease and covered by two fried eggs. Four days later, and I think I'm still digesting that meal!

Update: My Danish friend, Sarah, confirmed today that the dish Stephen ate is indeed disgusting to all but old Danish men.

SKAGEN

Skagen is a beautiful little fishing village with a harbor, clusters of neatly kept up yellow, red, and white homes, and stretches of sandy beaches...lined with hulking bunkers built by the Nazis during WWII. Still a bustling route for ships, it is easy to see why they put down these ugly cement roots.

We heard there was some controversy about whether to demolish the bunkers. While the Danes have decided to preserve them for now, the sea is corroding the bunkers, lapping up inside and underneath them, and the sand is taking its toll on the structures too.

Death Metal in Denmark

Last night my law school mentor, Sara, invited me over for a lovely salmon dinner at her apartment, to a small party…and to a death metal concert in a hot, dark basement bar. As the lead singer of the band, Die Von Lust, also happens to be a third year law student at the University of Copenhagen, the crowd contained clumps of stylish, preppy law students; well-pierced, tattooed, and black trench coat wearing twenty-somethings; and a small table of the lead singer’s parents nursing towering glasses of dark beer and carefully squishing and inserting bright blue ear plugs before the concert.

This was my first death metal concert, and I have nothing to compare Die Von Lust to, but I thought the band’s music was cathartic and exciting! Sadly, the concert I attended may be Die Von Lust's last. Some members of the group want to continue as a death metal band. Other members want to transition to an 80s cover band. Hopefully the boys can work it out.

My Digs

Around Town II

For Lisa

I thought you would appreciate the giant talking cigarette located near the law school. When I pushed the red button on it, I heard a disembodied male voice that sounded kind of like my dad after I've made a bad decision.
